One of the Black Hills Stock Show's most popular events is the Ranch Rodeo. Over $21,000 worth of cash and prizes are awarded to teams from the five-state region competing for top honors. This year's  event will be presented at the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds.

Teams are comprised of four people, who will compete in three preliminary events for the chance to make the finals Tuesday night at 7:30 pm.  Preliminary events include the Steer Loading: contestants will load selected stock cattle into a stock trailer located in the center of the arena. The second event includes the range doctoring; teamwork of two horseback ropers, one teammate on the ground and a designated "doctor", must sort out selected cattle, herd them across a time line, rope them and give them a simulated vaccination. The last preliminary event includes the stray gathering; four horseback riders must rope two preselected steers and tie a bottom and front legs up on both head of cattle.

All events are centered around common ranching practices that all the contestants engage in everyday life on a working ranch.

The finals incorporates new events into competition. Final events include; Titan Trailer Relay Race,  Rope-Mug-Tie event, Stray Gathering, Double Mugging, and the Crown Royal Ranch Bronc Ride. The Trailer Relay requires four contestants to exit a Chevy pickup, mount horses for a relay race each rounding the arena, and reloading their horses. Time is called when all constants climb into the pickup and flash their headlight to signal time.

The Rope-Mug-Tie, like the range doctoring event, requires constant to rope, bulldog the preselected steer and tie three legs. The third event is the wild cow milking, where teams combine their talents of roping both the head and heals of the Corriente cow and milk it. The milker then removes the heel rope and sprints to the judge with both the bottle of milk and the removed rope.

The final event includes the Crown Royal Wild Bronc Ride. Contestants ride in a stock saddle rather than a bronc saddle typically used in the saddle bronc competition. Rider is required to ride for 6-seconds, a mounted team member then catches the wild bronc and the remaining team members help rider dismount and unsaddle the horse.

Applications for the event will be ready the first of January for this great event at the Central States Fairgrounds.
